TVC News, bagged two international awards on November 20, 2013. While Vivienne Irikefe, TVC reporter, came first in a contest of over 200 submissions focusing on the coverage of vaccines and immunisations organised by the International Centre for Journalists, ICFJ, in Washington DC, the television station was also honoured in London, United Kingdom, at the 2013 annual awards of the Association for International Broadcasting, AIB.
Irikefe’s report on the failure to vaccinate all newborn children in Nigeria against polio was poignant and involved the use of stirring images and powerful interviews. Joyce Barnathan, ICFJ president, said the story “served as a lesson to all in how to conquer devastating yet preventable diseases such as polio.”
On his part, Nigel Parson, TVC’s chief executive, remarked that the awards showed the increasing clout of the pan-African news channel on the international scene. “TVC News come a long way in a short time and these awards are recognitions of the fantastic achievements of everyone at the channel,” he said.
